Corporate Plan 2011-2014

This corporate planning period will be particularly challenging. The Scottish Government’s budget allocation for the Legal Aid Fund and for the Board’s running costs has reduced significantly in 2011-12 and is likely to reduce further in future years. The challenge will be to deliver these savings while maintaining access to justice for the people of Scotland.
Our key priorities over the next year will be:
• Enabling access to justice
• Delivering best value for the taxpayer
• Delivering significant savings to the Legal Aid Fund and the Board’s running costs
• Improving the efficiency of the wider justice system
• The Board’s additional responsibility to monitor and advise Scottish Ministers on the availability and accessibility of legal services

The plan and our new performance indicators reflect our commitment to high standards of service delivery and continuing to improve the delivery of legal aid in Scotland for applicants, opponents and the legal profession. Our plan is aligned with the Scottish Government’s Purpose and we will contribute to six of the Scottish Government’s National Outcomes.
Our work will focus on
- access to justice
- best value for the taxpayer
- contributing to an efficient justice system.

Over the next three years there will be substantial change to the justice system in Scotland. Alongside these changes, legal aid will also see significant development.
First, we will work to further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of our own functions, the operation of the legal aid system and its interaction with the rest of the justice system. Second, we want to ensure that there are sufficient providers of legal aid services to meet the needs of the public across Scotland for high quality, good value legal aid services.
