Legal Aid Online—Availability
The system is available 24x7 except Sunday evening between 10pm and 11pm when the system is unavailable to allow back up to take place. The system will also be unavailable for scheduled updates and maintenance. Scheduled downtime will be advertised with a message on the Log-In page. We will aim to give at least 24 hours notice of any scheduled downtime. Unscheduled downtime is when there is a system failure and access is no longer possible. In such circumstances we aim to have the system up and running in a maximum of 2 hours.
System Requirement—Hardware
To use Legal Aid Online, you can use a PC, laptop, Apple Mac or netbook with internet access. We are also currently testing the system for use with tablet devices such as i-pads.
System Requirement—Software
Operating systems - We do not recommend any specific operating system for the online system but we do recommend that your operating system is reasonably up to date. For example, for Windows-based platform users, we recommend Windows XP Professional/Home Edition as a minimum. For all operating systems, we recommend you keep them up to date - for example, with patches and security updates, installed as soon as they become available in order to ensure you keep your systems secure. Browsers - Of more importance is the type of Browser you use. The current system has been tested using Windows Internet Explorer IE7 and Firefox 3.5. We have also recently started testing under Safari and Google Chrome. Again in order to take full advantage of the improving features of the online system we recommend that you keep your browser reasonably up to date Connection to the internet - You must have a connection to the internet. While a basic dial-up or ISDN connection is enough for light or occasional use, you may find its slow speed frustrating. For most users a broadband connection is recommended, as it will improve access speeds.
Scanning
When you are scanning documents:
- If possible save them as .pdf or failing that .tif files (most scanners will scan to pdf).
- Set your scanner to scan in black and white and to a maximum of 300 dpi – this will save you time when you upload them to Legal Aid Online.
- Where possible have your scanner set up to scan to file rather than scan to email. This will allow you to scan and save the file to an area on your pc/systems which is quicker to retrieve and attach online than from an email.
- Scanners with a document feeder option are preferable as they allow you to scan batches of documents rather than individual pages.
Further guidance on attachments can be seen here: Scanning Guidance (this document is to be updated in due course).
