BOARD MEMBERS AND SENIOR STAFF

Our work is overseen by Board members, who are appointed by Scottish Ministers (the number of members can vary between 11 and 15). To provide a balanced range of knowledge and experience, they include people from the wider community as well as solicitors and advocates.

Iain Robertson CBE, Chairman Scottish Legal Aid Board
Iain Robertson CBE, Chairman 1.4.06 - 31.3.14

Iain Robertson qualified as a solicitor in 1973 and spent 15 years with BP in international law and finance, latterly as Director of Acquisitions and Divestitures in the USA before becoming the first Chief Executive of Highlands and Islands Enterprise from 1990 to 2000.

In addition to other private and public sector roles he has served as a member of several boards including The Accounts Commission, The Scottish Tourist Board, Locate in Scotland Supervisory Board, the Cairngorms Partnership and the Legal Services Group Board at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).

Mr Robertson is Chairman of the Coal Liabilities Strategy Board at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and an Independent Member of the Strategic Management Group at HMRC Solicitor’s Office.

Les Campbell
Les Campbell 01.04.11 - 31.03.16

Les Campbell is a Chartered Accountant and is currently Finance Director at Student Loans Company Ltd. Before joining Student Loans Company, he was Director of Finance & Corporate Services at Glasgow Housing Association and prior to that he spent over 25 years in a variety of financial roles in the private sector.

Joseph Hughes

Joseph Hughes qualified as a solicitor in 1984 and set up his own practice in 1986 specialising in criminal court work. He is currently a Senior Partner operating 5 offices with 8 other solicitors. He is a solicitor advocate (criminal) and a member of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King’s College, London. He also holds a number of tribunal and voluntary sector posts, including Legal Advisor to the General Dental Council.

Alastair Kinroy QC 1.4.10 - 31.3.14

Alastair Kinroy has been a member of the Scottish Bar since 1987 and a Queen’s Counsel since 2005. Previously he was a court solicitor in Edinburgh. His practice has been mostly in the Court of Session, with occasional sheriff court work. In his early years at the Bar he did a volume of family law work; in more recent years commercial work has been a significant part of his practice. His practice has always had a large element of personal injury work and professional negligence cases.

Denise Loney

Denise Loney qualified as a solicitor in 1987 and has held a variety of positions in private practice from trainee to partner. Her area of expertise is civil litigation and she is currently Director of Litigation Services Scotland at Opitma Legal.

 
Paul McBride QC
Paul McBride QC 1.4.06– 31.3.14

Paul McBride joined the Bar in 1988 and became Counsel in the UK in the year 2000. He has been Vice Chairman of the Faculty of Advocates Criminal Bar Association and has served as an Advocate Depute.

Ray Macfarlane 1.4.10 -  31.3.14

Ray Macfarlane practised as a solicitor in Glasgow before moving into senior management roles with Scottish Enterprise and HBOS plc. She is Deputy Chair of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen, a trustee of the National Galleries of Scotland and a non-executive director of the Scottish Housing Regulator.


Susan McPhee

Susan McPhee 1.1.05-31.3.12

Susan McPhee has been the Head of Social Policy and Public Affairs with Citizens Advice Scotland since 1998. Before this, she was a legal services adviser with Citizens Advice Scotland, having previously been a solicitor in private practice from 1981 to 1990.

Bill McQueen CBE 1.4.10 -  31.3.14

Bill McQueen is former Deputy Chief Executive of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and has extensive experience of central government and its sponsored bodies, having also worked in the Scottish Office Executive in a number of policy areas including transport, management and organisation, and delivery of corporate services.

Elaine Rosie

Elaine Rosie 1.1.05-31.3.12

Elaine Rosie has been the Training and Development Manager with Shelter Scotland since 2000, with responsibility for training and the Scottish Homelessness Advisory Service. Before this, she was the Deputy Director of Shelter Scotland for eight years, with responsibility for managing all Shelter’s advice and legal services provision in Scotland. Now an Associate with Solace Enterprises.

  Sheriff Ray Small 1.4.10 -  31.3.14

Ray Small has been a Sheriff at Hamilton since 2001, having previously served as a temporary and part-time sheriff for three years. Before appointment to the bench, he qualified as a solicitor in 1982 and practised in Glasgow, specialising in civil and criminal court work. He joined the Bar in 1992 and practised there until his shrieval appointment.

Graham Watson Graham Watson 1.4.06 - 31.3.14

Graham retired from the Royal Air Force in 2003 as a Group Captain after 31 years service. He is currently a member of Fife NHS Board. He has over 30 years of senior management experience in a wide range of appointments.
